This particular standard sets out 11 primary labour rights which the businesses aspiring to this standard would need to have incorporated in their supply chain:

  • It requires businesses to allow the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. In other words, it allows workers to create unions or workers’ associations.
  • This standard requires businesses to provide the workers a fair remuneration.
  • The enterprise should provide its workers a safe and healthy environment to work in, ensuring regular risk assessment and elimination.
  • The enterprise should lay out a set of protections for any workers that are not yet adults.
  • The enterprise should not be indulging in any form of forced servitude, trafficked or non-voluntary labour.
  • The enterprise should not tolerate any act of corruption, extortion, embezzlement or bribery.
  • The business should have no discriminatory policies and should provide equal opportunities to everyone.
  • The enterprise should obey all the laws in relation to the hours of work required.
  • The business should not employ anyone below the legal minimum age.
  • No employees at the business should be precariously employed and should be hired on the basis of documented contracts.
  • The enterprise should take all steps necessary to avoid damage to the environment.
